Understanding how Mexican pharmacies work is very useful information for any traveler or expatriate living in the country because in Mexico and especially in the capital there are a lot of pharmacies some of them offering their service 24 hours a day and where you can find a variety of medicines that will help you to alleviate different symptoms, However, you will not be able to find all the medicines available since not all of them are over-the-counter and to buy some of them, such as psychotropic drugs or antibiotics, you will need a prescription and that can be a big problem if you are not sure where to go to get one.
Due to the large number of existing mexican pharmacies I will not mention all of them to make the post too long so I will only mention the most common ones.
The Two most famous mexican pharmacies
1. Farmacias Similares
The “Farmacias Similares” are famous for their almost iconic character Dr. Simi that is in the logo of the company and also from time to time can be seen a botarga of the character in some of its branches, this chain of over-the-counter pharmacies is a great option accessible to anyone and where you will find different options that will help you with the ailments that you may have and also with a cheaper price than in other countries.
In different branches of these pharmacies they have a medical office where for a cost ($30 Pesos) they offer general medical attention, dental offices where you can get consultations and basic dental procedures and nutritional offices to have knowledge of how to have a better diet, you can check through their website which branches have these services although not always the attention is immediate and you will have to wait for your turn.
2. Farmacias del Ahorro
“Farmacias del ahorro” are another very famous chain of Mexican pharmacies (very similar to Farmacias Similares) and where you will generally find the same products and in the same way at a low price, in this pharmacy unlike the previous one if medical orientation service is free with a basic medical service performed by qualified doctors, ethical and certified by what is read on the official website. .
In both pharmacies you can be treated for common symptoms such as headache, stomach ache, colds, coughs, diarrhea, bruises, etc. After diagnosis, the pharmacist can give you a prescription if necessary to purchase the medication.
Apart from the two pharmacies already mentioned there are other mexican pharmacies that also have a medical office and home service such as Farmacias San Pablo or Farmacias Guadalajara and even some of these have apps to make the service easier if you feel too sick to go out but keep in mind that the cost of medicines can be higher.
As a last recommendation remember that if you already know what medications you require you can choose to use Amazon, although of course delivery may take more than a day depending on the area where you are.
Don´t forget to learn a few phrases in Spanish:
– ¿Necesito receta para este medicamento? – Do I need a prescription for this medication?
– ¿tienen doctor en la farmacia para tomar una consulta médica? – do you have a doctor at the pharmacy to take a medical consultation?
