As a Spanish teacher in Mexico City, one of my favorite experiences to offer my students is a trip to the Mercado de Jamaica, where we take a cooking class in Spanish to learn how to make traditional Mexican dishes.
This market is a hub for local vendors, selling everything from fresh produce and spices to meats and cheeses. As we walk through the market, we’ll practice our Spanish by chatting with the vendors and learning about the different ingredients we’ll be using in our cooking class.
Once we’ve gathered all of our ingredients, we’ll head to the cooking school, where we’ll be met by a local chef who will guide us through the process of making traditional Mexican dishes. From salsas and guacamole to tamales and mole, we’ll learn how to make a variety of authentic dishes, all while practicing our Spanish.
Throughout the class, I’ll be there to help my students with their Spanish and to provide any additional support they may need. Whether it’s translating a recipe or explaining a cooking technique, I’m there to ensure that my students are able to fully participate and get the most out of the experience.
By the end of the class, we’ll have not only learned how to make some delicious Mexican dishes but also improved our Spanish language skills. It’s an immersive and fun way to learn about Mexican cuisine and culture, and it’s an experience that my students always remember fondly.
